Getting a grip on X's (once Twitter) latest algorithm twists is pretty much the game-changer for us looking to shout our causes from the digital rooftops. When X decided to share their algorithm by putting it up on GitHub, it was like getting a backstage pass to the show. But, even with the curtain pulled back, there's still much to guess and test. Apparently, machine learning keeps some cards close to its chest.
Since diving into activism back in 2013, starting with foster care initiatives, I've been on a mission to decode the digital space to maximize my impact. Testing out theories on a mix of accounts has given me a front-row seat to what works and what fizzles out in the algorithm's eyes.
Here's the latest scoop: the algorithm's got a new favorite flavor—timeliness. Staying relevant and quick on your feet with content that taps into the current vibe will give your visibility the boost you are needing. But it's not just about posting what's hot; it's also who you're interacting with on the X platform and the kind of conversations you're sparking.
Good chat is gold. Engaging your crowd in ways that get them talking back, sharing thoughts, or even dropping a like here and there tells the algorithm you're worth listening to. This is about crafting spaces for meaningful exchanges, not just broadcasting into the void. This is ultimately great news for changemakers, as being stuck in an echo chamber is certain death to any cause.
Staying sharp and ready to pivot with these algorithm updates isn't a nice-to-have skillset; it's essential. It's the difference between whispering into the wind and having your message heard and felt across the world. Changemakers who keep their content fresh, engaging, and grounded in the now helps you steer through the digital maze, turning online efforts into a megaphone for change.
Old-school tricks like hashtag hurricanes and timing your tweets by the stars? That's yesterday's news. The algorithm's evolved, now it’s our turn. Flooding your tweets with hashtags or playing the follow-back game isn't the ticket to visibility it once was. Keeping a balanced following-to-follower ratio (following to followers needs to be between 45-60%) and choosing authentic engagement over straight up broadcasting is where it's at.
Here's a couple of pro moves to use: First, instead of leading with a link that screams "leave X," tuck it into a follow-up tweet. This little trick keeps your audience stuck on your feed and boosts your engagement stats. Plus, X rewards those who create content that keeps viewers on the platform by boosting your post and ultimately your account. Second, When it comes to picking your battles or, in this case, conversations, be choosy. Prioritize content and dive into discussions that amplify your cause and leave the algorithm-tripping topics on the cutting room floor - this alone can be the hardest and most important skill to master. For many, if not most, changemakers the issue they are working to amplify is controversial. Learning the line is crucial, finding ways to weave your issue into less controversial topics that are trending is the sweet spot.
Mixing in visuals? Absolutely, but keep it balanced. A splash of imagery or video can make your posts pop, but don't let it drown out your message. Striking that visual balance can make your content stick out; at the moment it seems that balance is between 40% and 55% of your posts should include high quality media of some sort.
Just like in real life, the power of rubbing digital elbows with the big players in your space can’t be matched. Show some genuine love on their posts, and you might just see your own content getting a boost. Few would disagree that the name of the game is networking and building connections when changing hearts, minds, and policy is the goal. Focus on building connections online that either may translate to offline connections that matter to your cause and/or that matter to the algorithm. Of course all your X connections won’t become real life pals, but look for ‘high impact’ accounts - those that are active consistently, have a good follow ratio, and provide value - that align with your issue or your overall topic. Most likely their followers are the same people you are hoping to reach, to educate them on your issue to change their hearts and minds. When you are consistent in engaging with these high quality and high impact accounts, the algorithm rewards you by placing your other content in their feed, and the feed of their followers. You can’t ask for more in this game!
Keeping tabs on what's working is like having a roadmap in this constantly shifting landscape. Those analytics? They're your best friend, guiding you to tweak, refine, and sometimes overhaul your strategy to ensure your voice isn't just another echo in the chamber. This is another skill which can take some time and serious effort to master, but like the others I’ve mentioned it will pay off in spades.
Adapting to Twitter's latest changes is one of the most important things changemakers can do to ensure their voice and message reaches the masses. Strategically and rapidly adapting, staying informed, and genuinely engaging with your community is what sets you apart in the digital hustle. How do we change hearts and minds if we are stuck in our own echo chamber? Of course some folks just get it right without even trying - they've got the knack for hitting the sweet spot and one of ‘those’ personalities. But, the rest of us have to put in a bit more work. Okay, a lot more work. The new owner of X, formerly Twitter, has turned everything we thought we knew about how to play the game on social media on its head. Some of the changes are keeping us more censured and deboosted than ever, but others are making it possible for us to maximize our reach and make a bigger impact. It's all about understanding the game and playing it smart.
Staying on top of social media's ever-changing rules is key. What works now might not work tomorrow. Want to know why I spend so much time learning, testing, and tweaking strategies? So you don’t have to. By staying savvy with the algorithm, sharing stories that grab audiences attention, and connecting the right way we can make our messages fly further. Follow me on X, formally Twitter, @Impact2HEAL for more tips and tricks as I navigate a cause close to my heart - pain management and harm reduction in an opioid crisis.
Each of us created our account with the intent to change the hearts and minds of as many people as possible, right? The tools and tips we talked about are our secret sauce to do just that. They'll help us reach more people, make them care about our causes, and even convince a few to take action. What more can we ask for? It's about making every post count, driving the message home, and rallying the troops, one well-placed tweet at a time. Here's to us—the changemakers—making waves in the digital sea, armed with insight, strategy, and a whole lot of heart.
